How to Install Flagstone Patio with Mortar?

How to Install Flagstone Patio with Mortar?

Flagstone is a natural material available in a variety of sizes and colors. It can be cut and shaped in many ways and in different patterns. This timeless material can blend well with your yard, giving it a unique look. Flagstone patio installation can be done using sand or mortar. But before starting out, you need to pick the right spot for your yard and contact the local utilities to ensure you do not disturb the underground pipes or cables.

Before You Begin

Gather all the necessary equipment to avoid any inconvenience during the process. You will need:

  • flagstone
  • road crush
  • Stakes
  • Rake
  • Shovel
  • Broom
  • twine or Mason’s string
  • rubber mallet and hammer
  • leveling bars
  • Garden hose

Steps To Install Flagstone Patio with Mortar?

Follow these steps to get the installation done to perfection.

Step 1: Mark the Edges

The first step in patio installation should always be setting up Mason’s lines that define the perimeter of your patio. For that, you need to drive two stakes, one at each corner. From here, tie a mason’s line to opposing pairs of stakes. This is done to create a layout of your desired shape.

Step 2: Excavate the Area

In the second step of patio installation, you need to excavate the area for at least 8 inches in depth. This is done to ensure the final patio is leveled with the surrounding yard. In order to figure out the exact depth needed to excavate, you can consider adding 6 inches to the thickness of flagstones. For instance, if your flagstone is 2 inches, you will excavate to a depth of 8 inches.

Step 3: Mix Mortar

Now, to prepare the mortar, combine three parts sand and one part Portland. Mix it by adding the water gradually until you achieve the desired consistency. The mortar should be for a 3×3-foot section. You can continue to add more ingredients and water as needed.

Step 4: Organize and Lay the Patio Stones

This is the most interesting part of the process. Before laying the stones to install a flagstone walkway in grass, you need to arrange the flagstones around the walkway to find out the best pattern. Now, you need to apply a thick layer of mortar onto the compacted soil by using a trowel. Once done, carefully lay the flagstones onto the mortar bed. Make sure you press each piece firmly into its place. At the same time, keep a safe space between the stones for joints. This has to be roughly one inch.

Step 5: Level It

To ensure leveled flagstone patio installation, check each stone individually in relation to its adjacent stone. If you find any low stones, remove them to add mortar and reset them. For the high stones, just tap them down. If this doesn’t work, lift them slightly and carefully scoop out a small amount of mortar to level them.

Step 6: Fill the Joints

Now, you can fill the joints using mortar. But make sure to keep it slightly wet this time. This way, you can easily fill it in a mortar bag, which allows for easier application. Fill the joints with mortar and press it firmly between the spaces. At this point, you can use a jointing tool to smooth out the mortar and give it your desired shape and finish. Once you are done, wipe off any excess mortar and clean the flagstone using a damp cloth or sponge. Do this quickly, as the mortar can dry out, making the removal difficult.
